چکیده

Expert finding is concerned about finding persons who are knowledgeable on a given topic. It has many applications in enterprise search, social networks, and collaborative management. In this paper, we study the problem of diversification for expert finding. Specifically, employing an academic social network as the basis for our experiments, we aim to answer the following question: Given a query and an academic social network, how to diversify the ranking list, so that it captures the whole spectrum of relevant authors’ expertise? We precisely define the problem and propose a new objective function by explicitly incorporating topic-based diversity into the relevance ranking measurement. A learning-based model is presented to solve the objective function. Our empirical study on a real system validates the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method can achieve significant improvements (+15.3%-+94.6% by MAP) over alternative methods.

KDEIM at NTCIR-12 IMine-2 Search Intent Mining Task: Query Understanding through Diversified Ranking of Subtopics

In this paper, we describe our participation in the Query Understanding subtask of the NTCIR-12 IMINE Task. We propose a method that extracts subtopics by leveraging the query suggestions from search engines. The importance of the subtopics with the query is estimated by exploiting multiple query-dependent and query-independent features with supervised feature selection. To diversify the subtop...

Microsoft Research Asia at the Web Track of TREC 2009

In TREC 2009, we participate in the Web track, and focus on the diversity task. We propose to diversify web search results by first mining subtopics, and then rank results based on mined subtopics. We propose a model to diversify search results by considering both relevance of documents and richness of mined subtopics. Our experimental results show that the model improves diversity of search re...

Exploiting Ontologies for Search Result Diversification

We report our systems and experimental results in the diversity task of web track 2012. Our goal is to exploit the structured data, i.e., the ontologies, as well as unstructured data for search result diversification. We use two strategies in the diversification systems. The first strategy combines the ontology and unstructured data to extract integrated subtopics. It then uses the coverage bas...

A Study of Pattern-Based Suptopic Discovery and Integration in the Web Track

We report our systems and experiments in the diversity task of TREC 2011 Web track. Our goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods for subtopic extraction and diversification steps on the large data collection. In the subtopic extraction step, we extract subtopics using both structured data, i.e., ODP, which provides high quality information and unstructured data, i.e., origi...

NTU Approaches to Subtopic Mining and Document Ranking at NTCIR-9 Intent Task

Users express their information needs in terms of queries to find the relevant documents on the web. However, users’ queries are usually short, so that search engines may not have enough information to determine their exact intents. How to diversify web search results to cover users’ possible intents as wide as possible is an important research issue. In this paper, we will propose several subt...
